Location: Kent

image relating to news item A celebration of the Kent coast, this programme provides free or subsidised events for the Kent public right round our 350 miles of varied coast line and takes place during October half term. This year’s programme is sponsored by the Environment Agency.

In 2009, twenty different organisations will be involved and a new element will be “Fishing and eating for a healthy sea” which will focus on the fishing industry, seafood and underwater life.

The full programme details will be available on Explore Kent, by the end of September - www.kent.gov.uk/explorekent

There will be events focusing on heritage and wildlife and everything from guided walks, markets, stalls, exhibitions, art events and trips out on the water will be available.

One element of Coastal Week: “The Forgotten Front Line: Seasalter to Swalecliffe during World War II” will be getting a head start with an exhibition running in Whitstable Museum and Art Gallery from 12th September.

This is timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the declaration of war with Germany in 1939. Showcasing a community's preparation for enemy invasion, the exhibition is illustrated by period photography, documentation and personal recollections of families from Whitstable.

Aerial photography from 1946 has been digitally enhanced, providing a vivid picture of the town damaged by enemy action and the range of fortifications constructed to repel the invaders still in-situ.

The “Fishing and eating for a healthy sea” activities will take place around the Kent coast, but there will be big events at the fishing ports of Whitstable, Ramsgate and Folkestone.

Chris Drake, Coastal Officer at Kent County Council said: - “Kent has a strong fishing tradition with a huge variety of fish and shellfish being landed. We hope that coastal week will encourage people to get out and discover what seafood is available and when.”

Resources relating to sustainable seafood will be available at events. The Marine Conservation Society has a “Pocket Good Fish Guide” which allows consumers to make the right choices when shopping.  Produced in Kent will have the “Soul to Soul” leaflet available, which provides a guide to fishmongers and restaurants selling sustainable seafood landed in Kent.  Kent Farmers Market Association will also be promoting market days with local seafood available.

We hope that this year’s coastal week has something for everyone and look forward to seeing you in October!
